Benjamin Turner
Benjamin Turner was born about 1828 in Hardy County, Virginia, in the part of the county that became Grant County, West Virginia, in 1866. He married Mary C. Sears, called Polly, a Hardy County woman born in 1825. Their children were William Charles (1849), Elizabeth E. (1850), Emily (1852), Mary Catherine (1855), Martin (1855) and Gabriel (1858).
Two records of the time name him as a father. When Gabriel married Annie Keplinger in Grant County in December 1882, the marriage register gave his parents as "Benjamin & Mary C. Turner". When Gabriel died in 1943, his death certificate named his father as Benjamin Turner, born in West Virginia, and his mother as Polly Ann Sears.
Polly's gravestone at Mount Hebron Cemetery, Maysville, calls her "Mary C., wife of Benj'n Turner" and gives her death as 9 May 1894. A grave at Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia, is attributed to him: a Confederate private of Company C, 10th Florida Infantry, who died at Howard's Grove Hospital in Richmond on 11 August 1864. That soldier enlisted at Fernandina, Florida, in December 1861, a long way from Hardy County, and whether he is the same Benjamin Turner is not settled.
