Gabriel Turner
Gabriel Turner was born in Hardy County, Virginia, on 12 March 1858, in the part of the county that became Grant County, West Virginia, in 1866. His parents were Benjamin Turner and Mary C. "Polly" Sears. His brothers and sisters were William Charles, Elizabeth E., Emily, Mary Catherine and Martin Turner.
On 28 December 1882, at 24, he married Annie Keplinger, also 24, in Grant County. The Rev. Snowden Scott performed the wedding. The register names the parents of both: Benjamin and Mary C. Turner, and Moses and Susanna Keplinger. Gabriel was a farmer. They had three children: Calvin Olie Turner (1884-1953), Cora E. Turner, later Simpson (1887-1908), and Clarence Edgar "Red" Turner (1894-1963).
Annie died of consumption at their home near Maysville on 26 April 1903. Clarence was nine. In 1908 Gabriel married Emma Goldizen (1887-1979), almost thirty years younger than he was. Their children were Marvin H. Turner (1908-1911), Opal Annie Turner Heavener (1911-2005), Virgil Harman Turner (1914-1988), Flossie Belle Turner Rohrbaugh (1920-2007) and Glenn William Turner (1922-1961).
Gabriel farmed near Maysville, in the Milroy district of Grant County, all his life. He died there at 6 in the evening on 28 September 1943, aged 85 years, 6 months and 16 days, of heart disease and old age. Emma, then 56, gave the particulars for his certificate. The Petersburg funeral director Earl Bush buried him on 30 September 1943 at Mount Hebron Cemetery, Maysville. He shares a stone there with Emma.
