Bert A. Gillow
Bert Austin Gillow was born on 9 September 1876 in Damascus Township, Wayne County, Pennsylvania, a son of Albert W. Gillow and Alinda Potter. The census of 1880 lists him at three, as Burritt, on his father's farm in Manchester Township. He grew up there, and in 1900 he was twenty-four, single and still at home.
He married Margaret E. North, called Maggie, the only daughter of Joseph North and Mary Mosher. They farmed in Manchester Township near Equinunk and Lookout and had five children: Carl, Lee, Mary, Vincent and Paul. In 1910 the census found Bert, thirty-three, and Maggie, twenty-eight, with Carl, seven, Lee, six, Mary, four, and Vincent, three. In 1920 the same six were together on the farm.
On 12 September 1918, at forty-two, he registered for the draft with the Wayne County board at Honesdale. He gave his home as Rural Route 1, Equinunk, and his work as farmer, for himself. His nearest relative was Maggie Gillow. The registrar described him as of medium height and medium build, with blue eyes and brown hair. He signed the card "Bert Austin Gillow."
Maggie was ill for about two years and died at home at Lookout on 20 December 1924, aged forty-three. Their youngest, Paul, was ten months old. Their daughter Mary married George A. Rutledge and died in 1934, at twenty-eight.
In 1930 Bert was fifty-three and widowed, with his son Lee, twenty-six, at home. In 1940 he was sixty-three and still farming at Equinunk, in the same house as in 1935. Living with him were Clara Potter, seventy-eight, his mother's unmarried sister, entered as a hired hand, and Paul, sixteen, and Donald, thirteen. He died at Honesdale on 16 March 1941 and was buried at Lookout United Methodist Church Cemetery.
