Booker Mullins
Booker Mullins was born in Kentucky about 1819. On 9 July 1835, at Pikeville in Pike County, Kentucky, he married Nancy Potter. He was about sixteen.
In 1850 the census taker in Pike County found Booker Mullens, 31, with Nancey Jane, 34, born in North Carolina, and eight children: Susannah, 14, Sherwood, 12, Mary, 11, Sarah, 9, James, 7, Martha, 5, Nancey, 3, and Rhoda, 1. Elijah Mullens, 25, a Virginian, lived with them. A daughter Jane was born about 1853.
In the 1850s and 1860s the family crossed Pine Mountain into Wise County, Virginia. On 21 August 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, their daughter Martha, 18, born in Pike County, married J. M. Moore of Pike County in Wise County, and the register names her parents as Booker and Nancy Mullins.
Their daughter Jane married John R. Vanover, the son of a North Carolina family settled in Wise County. She died in Wise County in May 1875, aged 22, and her husband gave the assessor her parents' names, Booker and Nancy Mullens. Booker was dead by January 1867. That month, and again in July, the clerk of the Pike Circuit Court issued subpoenas for witnesses for the defendants in a suit Joseph Bryant had brought against A. Stewart and others, and among those summoned were Sherod Mullins and "Nancy Mullins (Booker Widow)". Isaac Potter, Nancy Collins and J. J. Mitchell were summoned with them. A memorial created by a descendant in 2025 says he was killed in Kentucky in 1865 and names his parents as Sherwood Mullins and Mary Roberts; his eldest son was a Sherwood.
