Brønla Åsmundsdatter
Brønla Åsmundsdatter, also written Brynhild and Osmundsdotter, was the only daughter of Åsmund Johannesen Stokka and Liva Jonsdatter Tøtland. Brønla is a local form of the name Brynhild. She carried the name of her father's mother, Brynhild Knutsdatter.
The two printed works that carry her disagree about her beginning. Drange's Erfjord book calls her Brønla Osmundsdotter Stokka, of Vats, born about 1623. Vikedals-ætter (1979) calls her Brynhild Skigelstrand, born 1634, after the farm in Vikedal where her father lived. Her father was born in 1610 by the same book, which makes 1634 the likelier year. Both books agree that she died in 1690.
About 1651 she married Gudmund Olsen, the only son of the rich Ola Larsen Håland of Erfjord. Vikedals-ætter says the two were second cousins. They settled at Ile in Vikedal in the 1650s, and their ten children grew up there: Ola, Osmund, Margit, Liva, Siri, Borgilla, Ingeborg, Lars, Kari and Brønla. A son carried her father's name and a daughter her mother's. Together, Drange writes, the couple ranked high among the largest landowners of western Norway.
Gudmund was lensmann in Vats from 1665 to 1671 and died in 1675, two years before his father. In 1677 she and Ola Håland's widow were sued together over the Håland estate, and in the settlement of 1677 and 1678 her eldest son Ola received most of Håland. In 1685 she deeded land to her son Osmund, lensmann in Vats, who lived at Stokka. She died in 1690. Her sons Osmund and Lars were both lensmenn, in Vats and in Vikedal.
