Capt. Edward Richmond
Born about 1632, probably in England before his father came over. He married first Abigail, daughter of James Davis of Portsmouth, and second Amy Bull, daughter of Governor Henry Bull of Newport and his wife Elizabeth.
He held office in Rhode Island for thirty years: General Solicitor in 1667, 1669, 1670 and 1672, Attorney-General from 1677 to 1680, Deputy in 1678, 1679 and 1686, and selectman across the 1680s. He was a lieutenant by 1686 and a captain by 1690, and one of the incorporators of Little Compton in 1674, where he owned several shares.
In King Philip's War he commanded a company. On 6 August 1676 the Assembly voted that Lieutenant Edward Richmond and his company should have half the produce of the seven Indians they had brought in, the Assembly having ordered that captured Indian men and women able for service be sold for nine years. Seventeen days later he sat as clerk of a court martial that tried four Indians and sentenced them to be executed.
He died in November 1696. His stone in the family burying ground on the old Richmond farm at Little Compton carries the oldest date on any gravestone in that town.
