John Richmond
Born in 1594 and came to America from Ashton Keynes in Wiltshire, probably leaving England about 1635. He was one of the purchasers of Taunton in 1637 and held six shares in the original purchase.
He was married before he crossed. His wife's name, the date of their marriage and the date of her death are not known.
He took the oath of fidelity at Taunton before 1640, but he was away from the town for much of his life. The Maine court records catch him at Saco in 1636 and 1637, suing and being sued; the Rhode Island records have him at Newport in the middle 1650s, sitting as one of that town's Commissioners and paying off a judgment against his son. His name is absent from the 1643 list of Taunton men able to bear arms, because by then he was already one of the older men of the settlement.
The family were large landowners in the easterly part of Taunton and gave the village in that quarter the name Richmondtown, which it still bears. He made his will on 14 December 1663 and died on 20 March 1664, aged seventy.
