Capt. John Benedict
John Benedict of Danbury, born in October 1689, the third son of James Benedict, one of the eight men who bought and settled that town. He was styled Captain and he sat in the Connecticut legislature for eight sessions spread over twenty six years, in October 1739, October 1747, May 1749, May 1750, October 1755, twice in 1764 and again in May 1765.
His first wife was Rachel, born in 1690, who died in February 1765. He married again, and it is the second wife, Ruth, who appears as his widow when the estate was distributed.
He died in February 1771. His will was proved on 25 March and the estate distributed on 15 May, six hundred and eight pounds in real estate and a hundred and eleven pounds of clear movables. The distribution names the children in order, John the eldest son, then Josiah, James, Joseph and Jachin the youngest, then the daughters: the widow Sarah Crofut eldest, Rebecca wife of Matthew Crofut, and Phoebe wife of Samuel Benedict. A daughter Rachel had died before him and her three children took her share.
