Capt. John Duvall
John Duvall was a son of Mareen Duvall, a Huguenot merchant and planter who had fled Nantes about 1650 and settled on the south side of South River in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The Huguenots were French Protestants. Mareen married at least three times, and which wife was John's mother is not known.
His father made his will on 2 August 1694. It gave the other children land, plantation by plantation, and to John it gave "5 shillings." Five shillings was a token sum, the kind of bequest that usually meant a child had already been provided for. The will also named "Sons John and Lewis and son-in-law Robert Tyler to assist wife in executorship." His father died within days, and the will was proved on 13 August 1694.
He married Mary, a daughter of William Jones Sr., a planter of Anne Arundel County. The family histories of 1905 and 1933 call her Elizabeth Jones. Her father's will of 31 May 1705 calls her "Mary, wife of John Duvall," and left personal goods to her and to "granddau. Mary Duvall." "She added considerably to his estate," J. D. Warfield wrote in 1905.
He held land in the forks of the Patuxent. He patented a tract there called Duvall's Range, and on 19 February 1699 he sold 708 acres of it to Hezekiah Linthicum. Warfield calls him "Captain John Duvall, who held another large estate." His father's will had separately left 200 acres called Duvall's Range to John's youngest sister, Johanna.
In November 1702 his neighbour John Gaither of South River died without a will. Three neighbours were named to divide the Gaither land among the eight children: John Duvall, John Hammond and a Howard.
His daughters married into that family. Elizabeth, born in 1687, married first in 1705 Benjamin Warfield, the youngest son of Capt. Richard Warfield. Her wedding gift was 780 acres of Lugg Ox, in the forks of the Patuxent. After Benjamin's death in 1716 she married John Gaither of Abington, the eldest of the Gaither heirs whose land her father had helped divide. Her sister Mary married his brother Edward Gaither on 21 February 1709 and was buried at All Hallows on 25 September 1710. Comfort, born on 17 March 1700, married William Griffith of Frederick County.
He was living on 31 May 1705, when his father-in-law named him in his will. When he died is not known.
