Elizabeth Duvall
Elizabeth Duvall was born in 1687, a daughter of Capt. John Duvall of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and his wife Mary, a daughter of William Jones Sr. Her grandfather was Mareen Duvall, a Huguenot merchant and planter who had come from Nantes about 1650. Her sister Mary married Edward Gaither on 21 February 1709 and was buried at All Hallows on 25 September 1710. Her sister Comfort, born in 1700, married William Griffith of Frederick County.
In 1705 she married Benjamin Warfield of Lugg Ox, the youngest son of Capt. Richard Warfield and Elinor Browne. "Her wedding gift was 780 acres of 'Lugg Ox,' in the forks of the Patuxent," J. D. Warfield wrote in his 1905 history of the county's families. The land came from her father. She bore Benjamin two children, Joshua and Elizabeth. He died in 1716, leaving her, in Harry Wright Newman's words, "a widow with two small children, Joshua and Elizabeth, and a comfortable estate."
About 1717 she married John Gaither of Abington, the eldest son of John Gaither of South River. He had been a widower for a year and had a house full of children by his first wife, Jane Buck. "His widow married John Gaither, the second, who administered," the 1905 history says of Benjamin. The match tied her twice to the Gaithers: her sister Mary had married John's brother Edward. John's sister Ruth was the wife of John Warfield, Benjamin's eldest brother.
She bore John Gaither eight children. Amos was baptized on 10 July 1720 and Ruth was born on 15 November 1721. Mary was baptized on 4 October 1724, and Joshua was born in 1726. Rezin, John, Edward and Elizabeth followed.
John died in 1739 and named her his executrix, the woman a will appoints to carry it out. On 4 December 1739 she filed the inventory of his personal estate, appraised at £358 10s. 6d. Her stepsons Benjamin and Edward Gaither signed it as kinsmen. His will had divided Abington among seven sons, among them her own Amos and Joshua and Jane Buck's son Richard.
As a widow she bought land back and handed it on. On 2 October 1749 she deeded her son Joshua 52 acres of Abington "for natural love and affections." She described the land in the deed as "which the said John Gaither took up and bequeathed to his son, John, deceased, my husband, who in his will bequeathed it to my son, Richard, as his share, and Richard sold it to me." Richard was her stepson. On 4 February 1757 she deeded another 52 acres of Abington to her son Amos. She was living then, at about seventy, and when she died is not known.
Her son Joshua Warfield is probably the "Joshua Warfield, Son of Benjamin long deceased," to whom Richard Warfield, her first husband's nephew, left 240 acres of Warfield's Range in his will of 1765. Her daughter Mary Gaither married that Richard's son Seth.
