Capt. John Webster
John Webster was baptised at Hartford in Connecticut on 26 October 1680, the second child and eldest son of John Webster of Hartford and Sarah Mygatt. His father died in December 1694, when he was fourteen. His mother married again in 1698, to Lt. Benjamin Graham. His father's estate was not finally divided until 7 August 1728, when the Hartford court named "Sarah Graham, alias Webster, relict of said John Webster; John Webster, eldest son; Ebenezer, second son; heirs of Jacob, the third son; Daniel, fourth son." His grandmother Susannah Webster, widow of Lt. Robert Webster, had named him first among "the now surviving children of my oldest son John Webster, deceased" in her will of 23 January 1698.
He joined the First Church of Hartford on 30 March 1712. On 25 December 1712 he married Abiel Steele, born 8 October 1693, a daughter of Samuel and Mercy (Bradford) Steele. She was nineteen and he was thirty two. The next year he was one of the original members of the new church at West Hartford, and "his wife's name appears in 1717." All twelve of their children were born and baptised at West Hartford, from Elisha in November 1713 to Robert in April 1736.
On 30 April 1719 he was one of nine Hartford men who signed articles of agreement, each taking a ninth share, "toward building a suitable house for a bolting mill, on land of Thos. Morgan, and for purchasing bolting cloth." A bolting mill sifted ground meal through a cloth to separate fine flour from bran. The other partners were Thomas Morgan, David Ensign Jr., Johanna Smith, Thomas Steele, David Bidwell, Cyprian Watson, Samuel Sedgwick Jr. and Caleb Watson.
About 1730 he moved the family to Southington, then a parish of Farmington. His eldest son Elisha went to Yale, graduated in 1738 and became the first minister of Canaan. In 1752 he deeded land as a gift to his "dutiful son John." On 30 June 1752, as "John Webster of Southington in Farmington," he made his will, with bequests to Abiel his wife, to his sons Elisha, Aaron, Osee and John, and to his six daughters, Jerusha, Marsa, Sarah, Ann, Susannah and Abigail.
He died at Southington in 1753. The inventory of his estate is dated 1 September 1753. The 1915 genealogy calls him Captain, presumably from a militia company, without giving the commission. His widow Abiel married on 25 May 1756, as his second wife, Stephen Hopkins of Waterbury, who died in 1769.
