Capt. John Webster

d. 1735 · Northampton MA
Died 1735
Father: Thomas Webster
Mother: Abigail Alexander
Children include Thomas

John Webster was born at Northampton in Massachusetts, a son of Thomas Webster and Abigail Alexander and a grandson of Gov. John Webster. The sources disagree on the day: the Northampton family list gives 20 February 1673, and the 1915 Webster genealogy gives 11 September 1672, "also given as Feb. 26, 1673." His father died in 1686, when he was about thirteen, and his mother before March 1690.

He married first a woman named Elizabeth, whose surname is not recorded. Their eldest, Thomas, was born on 12 October 1699 and died young. Elizabeth followed on 26 February 1700/1, then a second Thomas on 8 February 1703/4, Josiah on 26 January 1705/6, and John. The genealogy thinks all but the last were probably born at Northampton.

He was one of the first settlers of Lebanon in Connecticut. The land had been granted to its original proprietors on 1 November 1695, and at their meeting of December 1697 they set off to John Webster nine acres and three yards. About the same time he received a home lot of fifteen acres. It was bounded north-west by the highway, south-east by the home lot of George Webster, very probably his elder brother, south-west by the small street, and north-east by a highway near the brook. More land was laid out to him in March 1700 and April 1701, and another grant is recorded on 5 July 1710. On 5 August 1712 he bought land of Dr. John Loomis and sold it back to him the same day.

Elizabeth died before 1709. On 4 August 1709, at Lebanon, he married Grace Loomis. He died at Lebanon on 3 November 1735 and is buried in the old cemetery there, under a stone that names both wives. Seven weeks later, on 26 December 1735, his children agreed with their stepmother "to prevent disputes" and deeded to her land in the Five Miles, a tract of Lebanon. The deed names "John Webster of Lebanon, Thomas Webster of Hebron, Josiah Webster and Jedediah Strong and his wife Elizabeth ... being the only children of their late honorable father, John Webster of Lebanon, aforesaid, now deceased, and Grace Webster of said Lebanon, being the widow of said deceased."
