Thomas Webster
Thomas Webster was born on 8 February 1703/4, probably at Lebanon in Connecticut, a son of Capt. John Webster of Lebanon and his first wife Elizabeth. An elder brother, also Thomas, born in 1699, had died young. His father had come from Northampton in Massachusetts as one of the first proprietors of Lebanon. His father died in November 1735, and on 26 December that year Thomas joined his brothers and sister in a deed to their stepmother, Grace. The deed names "John Webster of Lebanon, Thomas Webster of Hebron, Josiah Webster and Jedediah Strong and his wife Elizabeth ... being the only children of their late honorable father, John Webster of Lebanon."
On 17 August 1727, at Lebanon, he married Lydia Lyman, born 23 November 1709, a daughter of Lt. Jonathan and Lydia (Loomis) Lyman. In 1732 he bought land in Hebron from Nathaniel Dewey of Lebanon and settled in the Gilead Society, the northern parish of Hebron. All thirteen of his children were born at Hebron between 1729 and 1751. Zeruah, born on 29 August 1740, was "often called 'Viah' for short."
He lived at Gilead about twenty years. Then the town of Bolton was set off on his northern side, and the new line left his house in Hebron, six miles from Hebron's centre and only three and a half from Bolton's. He bought a small plot of ground adjoining his land and moved the house over into Bolton. Several of his children who lived near him were still inside Hebron and stayed residents of that town. His first appearance in the Bolton records is a deed of 23 October 1751 from Jerijah Loomis, for land near the Hebron line. Beriah Loomis sold him more in the same neighbourhood on 25 November 1751 and 25 March 1754.
On 16 April 1760 "Thomas Webster and Lydia his wife of Bolton" sold land in Coventry to Elijah Lyman, with their son Simeon as a witness. In May and June 1760 he sat as Bolton's deputy in the General Assembly of the colony. When his son Simeon died and left young children, they made their home with their grandfather.
Lydia died on 10 December 1790, at eighty one. He lived another twelve years. He died at Bolton on 1 December 1802, and the family book gives his age to the day: ninety nine years, nine months and twenty two days. Both are buried at Bolton Center. His headstone has an urn under hanging swags carved in its arch, and a verse addressed to whoever stops to read it.
