Capt. Joseph Boynton

Joseph Boynton was born at Rowley in 1644, the eldest child of John Boynton the tailor and his wife Ellen. He spent almost the whole of a long life in the town he was born in, and held most of its offices in turn.

On 13 May 1665 he married Sarah Swan, daughter of Richard and Ann Swan of Rowley. She was about four years his elder. They were married fifty two years.

He was captain of the town's military company, town clerk, and representative to the General Court for many years. In 1671 he was made pinder for the north east field, the man responsible for impounding stray livestock, which is a smaller office than the others and one that shows the same thing: the town used him for whatever needed doing.

In December 1715, when he was past seventy, he moved to Groton. He did not go alone. On the fourth of that month he was dismissed from the Rowley church to the church at Groton together with his wife Sarah, his son Benoni, and Benoni's wife Ann. Sarah died at Groton on 27 February 1718. Afterwards he came back to Rowley, and he died there on 16 December 1730, at eighty six.

He had married again in the meantime. His second wife was Elizabeth Wood, and the intention was published on 5 March 1720, when he was seventy six.
