Ellen Pell enters the record on 4 May 1641, when the church at Boston admitted her to membership and described her as a maid servant of Atherton Hough. Hough was a substantial man. He had been a figure in Boston, in Lincolnshire, one of those who refused the Royal Loan in 1626, and a parishioner of John Cotton, whose nonconformity he shared and whom he followed to New England in 1633. Service in a household of that standing was ordinary work for an unmarried young woman, and it is the only description of Ellen Pell that survives from before her marriage.
On 1 August 1643 the Boston church dismissed her to Rowley, where, in the clerk's own phrase, she went in a way of marriage. The letters of dismissal followed on 21 February 1644, by which time the entry could describe her as now wife to one John Bointon, a member of that church. The wedding itself was never written down. The two church entries are what stands in its place.
John Boynton was a Rowley tailor, born in Yorkshire, with an acre and a half on Bradford Street. They were married about twenty seven years and had seven children who lived: Joseph, John, Caleb, Mercy, Hannah, Sarah and Samuel. He was buried in February 1670 and named her first in his will.
She married twice more, and both times to men near the end of their lives. On 30 August 1671 she married Maximilian Jewett at Rowley; he died on 19 October 1684. On 1 June 1686 she married Daniel Warner at Ipswich, as his second wife; he died on 9 September 1688. She died at Rowley on 5 August 1689, having buried three husbands and outlived the first of them by nineteen years.
Whose daughter she was is not recorded in Massachusetts. The register of Little Hale, a village in the Lincolnshire fen, has the christening of Elianor, daughter of Joseph Pell, on 12 November 1620. Elianor is the register form of Ellen, the age it gives would make her twenty at her admission to the Boston church and twenty three at her marriage, and Little Hale lies about twelve miles from the Lincolnshire Boston that Atherton Hough came out of. The entry fits in every particular that can be tested, though no document joins it to the woman in service at Boston. She is taken to be that child, and her father to be Joseph Pell, butcher of Boston, who died there in 1650 leaving unnamed children by an earlier wife; that identification rests on circumstance too.
