Capt. Thomas Taber

Thomas Taber was baptized at Yarmouth, on Cape Cod in Plymouth Colony, in February 1646. He was a son of Philip Taber, who had come to Plymouth in 1630, and probably of Philip's first wife, Lydia Masters.

In 1667 he married Esther Cooke, a daughter of John Cooke and Sarah Warren and a granddaughter of two Mayflower passengers, Francis Cooke and Richard Warren. She bore a son, Thomas, who died young, and a daughter, Esther, in 1671, and died herself at Dartmouth in 1671 or early 1672.

In June 1672 he married Mary Thompson, a daughter of John Thompson and Mary Cooke, and so a granddaughter of Francis Cooke. His second wife was his first wife's cousin. They had eleven children: Lydia, Sarah, Mary, Joseph, the twins Thomas and John, Jacob, Jonathan, Bethia, Philip and Abigail. Joseph was born on 7 March 1679.

He was at Dartmouth by 1672 and held nearly every town office. George L. Randall's Taber genealogy of 1924 lists him as selectman, surveyor, town clerk, assessor and captain of the militia. His house was burned in 1675, the year of King Philip's War, when Dartmouth was attacked. He built again in stone near Oxford, in what is now Fairhaven. Part of its chimney was still standing in 1924.

Mary died in 1723. Thomas died at Dartmouth on 11 November 1729.
