Carl Edmond Askins was born on 26 April 1916 at Winfield, Cowley County, Kansas, the son of Ed Askins and Sara Ella Miller. He grew up on the family farm and went to school in Cowley County. In 1930 the household in Beaver Township held Ed, Ella, Gladys, Walter, Carl and Hazel.

On 29 September 1937 he married Iris Pearl Coombs at the Hackney Baptist Church, the little church south of Winfield where his sister Gladys had married five years before. They made their home in the Winfield area. He drove trucks and ran heavy equipment. Their first child, Donald, came in August 1938, then Geraldine in 1941 and Lila in 1944, and a son Wayne. In 1940 the family was in Rock Creek Township.

In 1944 he joined the Navy and served in the Second World War aboard the USS Commencement Bay, an escort carrier. He was honourably discharged on 16 October 1945 and came home to Winfield. He worked for Walnut Township and farmed land east of town. Then he went to work for the City of Winfield and stayed more than 24 years, retiring in 1979 as Superintendent of the Street Department.

He was a member of the Millington Street Baptist Church. He liked camping and travelling, and he and Iris spent their winters in south Texas and Arizona. His son Donald died in 2000, his sister Hazel in 2002, his son-in-law Jerry Platter, and two grandsons, Leland Askins and Kevin Palmer. His sister Gladys Morgan died in June 2010 at 105, and Iris on 18 January 2011.

Carl died three weeks after her, on the morning of Friday 11 February 2011, at his daughter's home in Fairview, Oklahoma, aged 94. He left his son Wayne and wife Kathi of Copan, Oklahoma, his daughters Geri Palmer and husband Jack of Arkansas City and Lila Platter of Fairview, his daughter-in-law Donna Askins of Mulvane, 25 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. The funeral was at Miles Funeral Service on 18 February, Brother Jim Van Dyke officiating, with "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden", the same hymns as at Iris's service. His grandsons Brad, Jeff and Mike Askins, Brison and Mark Palmer and Steve Platter carried him. He is buried beside Iris at Highland Cemetery, Winfield. A memorial was established for the Hospice Circle of Love at Enid.
