Edward Askins
Edward Askins, Ed to everyone, was born on 11 August 1879, one of the children of William M. Askins and Litha Jane. His father, an Ohio-born farmer raised in Illinois, had brought the family to Chautauqua County, Kansas by 1880 and to Kingman County by 1884. Ed was a twin. In June 1880 the census found him at nine months old, written Edda, beside his twin sister Ida in his parents' house in Jefferson Township, Chautauqua County. Ida Mae married a Corbin and died in 1913. The family settled at last in Cowley County.
He married Sara Ella Miller, a daughter of the Civil War veteran George W. Miller of New Salem. Their children were Gladys Lillian, born 2 November 1904 at Winfield, Walter, Carl Edmond, born 26 April 1916, and Hazel Christine, born 1921. Ed farmed. In 1930 the family was in Beaver Township, Cowley County, Ed and Ella with Gladys, Walter, Carl and Hazel at home. Gladys married Glenn Morgan at the Hackney Baptist Church in 1932 and Carl married Iris Coombs there in 1937.
Ed died on 20 October 1956, aged 77, and is buried in the Graham section of Union-Graham Cemetery at Winfield, Block 2, Lot 45. Ella outlived him by fourteen years. His daughter Gladys lived to 105.
