Caroline Chatelain
Caroline Chatelain was born on 28 March 1861 at Marksville, Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana, by her gravestone. The memorial that marks her grave records that she was baptized Marie Caroline Chatelain at the Catholic church of Saint Paul the Apostle in Mansura, the next town southeast of Marksville. The census takers wrote her name Caroline and Carolina; her stone says Carolyn.
She married Andrew Jackson Sherman of Marksville, and in June 1880 she was 20, with a husband farming and a son a year old, Willy, who was Wiltz Sherman. Florestine was born in September 1881, George A. on 17 January 1884 and Izole in August 1886. Andrew died on 21 February 1888, aged 35. Caroline was 26 and pregnant, and her fifth child, Lelia, was born in August.
She did not marry again. In June 1900 she was a widow of 38 at the head of her own house in Marksville town, with Florstine, 18, George, 16, Izole, 13, and Lilia, 11, as the census taker spelled them. Wiltz was grown and gone. In 1910 she was still widowed in Police Jury Ward 2, with a boy of five, Ellis Sherman, in the house, and her son George lived nearby with his wife Cecile Bordelon and their first baby. She was in Marksville again in 1920 and in Ward 2 in 1930.
She died at Marksville on 1 June 1942, aged 81, fifty four years a widow, and was buried with Andrew in plot 2139 of Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Their stone reads: "SHERMAN. ANDREW, JAN. 19, 1853, FEB. 21, 1888. CAROLYN, MAR. 28, 1861, JUNE 1, 1942. Earth has no sorrows that heaven cannot heal."
