Caroline Winsmore
Caroline Winsmore was born about 1836, at Dover in Delaware by the fullest account her family gave. How a Delaware woman came to the Missouri bootheel is not recorded; she was there by about 1860, when she married, or had already married, John Fox, the Bavarian immigrant farmer of Tywappity Township in Mississippi County.
Five children came in ten years: William Henry about 1861, George in 1863, Mary Ellen in 1865, Annie in 1868, and Elizabeth, called Lizzie, in December 1870. Then she died. The 1880 census shows her husband a widower, and the account compiled at the family's memorials sets her death at 1871, which would make Lizzie a babe in arms when she lost her mother.
No record made while she lived is known. She exists on paper only in what her children's deaths preserved: three Missouri certificates, written by three different informants across twenty five years, each reaching for the name of a mother dead sixty years. Two of them, Lizzie's in 1918 and Mary Ellen's in 1935, say Caroline Winsmore of Delaware, and Mary Ellen's adds Dover. The third, William's in 1910, says Carrie McBride of Pennsylvania. The two Delaware readings agree and are preferred.
