George W. Fox
George W. Fox was born in May 1863 in Tywappity Township, Mississippi County, Missouri, the second son of John Fox, a Bavarian immigrant farmer, and Caroline Winsmore, a Delaware-born mother who died when George was a boy of about eight. The 1880 census shows him at seventeen in his widowed father's household, one of five children raised with the help of a hired housekeeper on the family farm south of Charleston.
On 10 January 1888 he and Nancy Ann Carlisle, a Kentucky-born woman whose family had lately come to Charleston from Hardin County, crossed the Mississippi to Alexander County, Illinois, the Cairo shore, and were married there, he twenty four and she twenty two, both recorded as of Charleston. Their first child, Birdie, was born in September 1889, and Ruby, Edgar William and George T. followed. The 1900 census shows the family farming at dwelling 124 in the south part of Tywappity.
He died 5 August 1909, aged in his mid forties, five months before Missouri began issuing death certificates, so no state record of his death exists. His stone at Calvary Cemetery in Charleston, the Catholic ground of his wife's people, carries his dates, and he was buried there beside the plot where Nancy would join him thirty years later. His father, his brother William and his sisters Mary Ellen and Lizzie lie across town at Oak Grove.
