Carrie Virginia Grimes was born on 6 July in Virginia. Her gravestone gives the year as 1873, but her death notice says she was 38 when she died, which puts her birth about 1883.

She married Andrew L. Waddell of Rectortown, Fauquier County. They had three children: Gibson, Mildred, and Fred Albert Waddell, born on 28 April 1917. The family lived at Rectortown, where Andrew later kept a garage.

Carrie died on 18 December 1921 "after a brief illness," leaving "three young children, two boys and one girl." Fred was four. She was buried at Sharon Cemetery, Middleburg, Loudoun County, on 21 December. A neighbor who signed as "A Friend" sent a notice to the Fauquier Democrat. It said that she "lived a beautiful life," that she "was devoted to her home and children, a kind neighbor and friend," and that the Rectortown community sent its deepest sympathy to "her husband and little Children."

Her tall stone reads "Carrie Virginia, Beloved wife of A. L. Waddell," with her dates and a verse that begins "I never will forget you dear one." Most of the verse has worn away. A small flat marker beside it reads "Carrie V. Waddell." Nearly sixty years later her son's death certificate gave her full maiden name, Carrie Virginia Grimes.
