Catharine Hasselwander
Kate Hartung was born Catharine Hasselwander in 1842. The 1880 census at Oxford, Kansas, gives Berlin as her birthplace and the birthplace of her parents. The 1895 state census gives Germany. Her gravestone calls her Kate. When her son John Adam died in 1958, the funeral home at Perry wrote her name as Katrina Hasselwander.
A family tree gives her marriage to Lorenz Hartung, a Prussian, on 30 March 1862 in St. Louis County, Missouri. Their first five children were born in Missouri: Margaret about 1863, Annie about 1865, Edward in 1866, Clara about 1869 and Frances about 1871. The family then moved to Kansas. Amanda was born there about 1873, Katurah, called Tura, in October 1876, and John Adam on 25 February 1883 at Oxford.
In June 1880 Catharine was 38 and keeping house on the farm in Oxford Township, Sumner County, with eight children at home. In 1895 she was 54, with three still at home, the youngest John, 12.
Her children went on to Oklahoma, Texas and other parts of Kansas, and they came back to Oxford to visit. In the autumn of 1906 the wife of her son Ed spent two weeks with her and Lorenz. In January 1911 John came up from Billings, Oklahoma, for a week with "his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hartung of Oxford, Kansas."
Lorenz died at Oxford in 1925. Kate died in 1926, at about 84. She is buried beside him in the Oxford Cemetery, under one granite stone that reads KATE 1842 1926. Their daughter Frances, who died in 1905, is named below them.
