John Adam Hartung
John Adam Hartung was born on 25 February 1883 at Oxford, Kansas. His parents, Lorenz Hartung, born in Prussia, and Kate Hasselwander, were German. They farmed at Oxford for the rest of their lives and are buried there. The funeral home that buried John wrote their names down in 1958 as Lawrentz Hartung and Katrina Hasselwander. His brother Ed, born in Missouri in 1866, also came to Perry and outlived him. His sister Tura married a George and stayed at Oxford.
On 25 June 1905 he married Etta Pearl Harlow at Enid, in what was then Oklahoma Territory. Two years later, in 1907, they came to Noble County. They lived first near Billings, in the north of the county. In December 1908 the Billings paper reported that little Gladys had been very sick, and that Mrs. Lillie Glasby was staying with Mrs. Hartung during her own illness. In January 1911 John left on a Saturday "to spend a week visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hartung of Oxford, Kansas." Later the family moved to Morrison, and John farmed there for the rest of his working life.
Their children were Gladys Sylvia, born 13 February 1906, Gertrude Mae, born about 1911, Claude Vernon, born 8 March 1914 at Morrison, and Clarence Oliver, born 11 April 1921 at Morrison. In 1930 the family lived in Autry Township near Morrison, with Gertrude and Claude still at home. In 1940 John was 57 and farming the same place, with Clarence, 19, and a lodger, W. E. Hoisington.
He belonged to the Anti-Thief Association, a farmers' society that tracked stolen horses and cattle, and to the Farmers Union. In time he retired from the farm and moved into Perry.
In early 1957 he had surgery at Enid. Clarence drove their mother and Gladys up from Morrison and Pawnee to see him. He died at his home in Perry at 3:10 in the afternoon of Thursday, 19 June 1958, after a long illness. He was 75.
His funeral was held at 2:30 on the Saturday in the Parker chapel at Perry. The Reverend Oscar L. Fontaine of the First Methodist church officiated, and he was buried at Grace Hill Cemetery. Etta Pearl survived him, with two daughters, Mrs. Gladys Hostutler of Pawnee and Mrs. Gertrude Norman of Perry, two sons, Claude of Mulvane, Kansas, and Clarence of Morrison, sixteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He and Pearl share a granite stone at Grace Hill. Each half carries a small oval photograph on porcelain: hers over MOTHER PEARL E., his over FATHER JOHN A., 1883, 1958.
