Catherine Baechle
Catherine Baechle was born in Germany on 30 May 1832; her death certificate gives the date, and the 1910 census age of seventy-seven fits within a year. Her parents were Conrad Bechle and Norburg Bentz, both born in Germany, as the certificate spells them; the mother's name is almost certainly Notburga, a saint's name Baden gave its daughters. Catherine had married George Will, borne Emily at Ste. Genevieve in 1858, and outlived her husband.
In April 1910 the enumerator of Ste. Genevieve Ward 2 recorded her, written Cathrine Buchle, seventy-seven years old, in the household of her widowed daughter Emily Burgert. Three generations of women lived within a few streets of each other: Catherine of Germany and Emily of Ste. Genevieve in that house, and Emily's married daughter Mary Helen Stackle nearby.
She declined through her last autumn, attended by Dr. R. W. Lanning from the tenth of October, and died at half past eleven on Christmas night, 25 December 1912, of what the certificate calls senile debility, with arterio sclerosis contributing. Emily supplied the particulars. John Basler, the Ste. Genevieve undertaker, buried her at Valle Spring Cemetery on 28 December. Her German town, her marriage record and her parents' further story are not known.
