Emily Will
Emily Will was born at Ste. Genevieve, Missouri on February 11, 1858, daughter of George Will, born in Germany, and Catherine Baechle, born in Germany in 1832. About 1878 she married Charles Burgert, a German-born blacksmith eleven years her senior, and bore six children between 1879 and 1899.
Charles died in 1909, and Emily lived twenty-eight years a widow. At the sale of his estate in February 1910 she was the buyer: one thousand dollars in cash for the Washington Street lot adjoining ground she already owned. The 1910 census shows the shape of her middle years: her own household in Ste. Genevieve, her son Charles at home, and her mother, written down by the enumerator as Cathrine Buchle, a Germany-born woman of seventy-seven, living with them.
On May 15, 1919 she made her will, dividing everything share and share alike among five children, Annie Giesler, Leo, Mary Staeckle wife of Andrew Staeckle, Louise Suhre and Charles, and naming her sons Leo and Charles executors without bond. Her youngest son Andrew, born in 1899, is not named in it.
She died at Ste. Genevieve on February 21, 1937, ten days past her seventy-ninth birthday, of the chronic heart disease that had troubled her since 1933, and was buried in the town on February 24. Her certificate is the document that carries her parents' names, and her will, made eighteen years earlier, was proved that same season.
