Catherine F. Ryan
Catherine F. Ryan was born in New Jersey about 1890. Both of her parents had been born in Ireland. Her maiden name survives because her son Raymond, applying for a Social Security number in November 1938, named his parents as Alfonso Derisi and Catherine F. Ryan.
She married Alfonso De Risi, an Italian-born tailor about five years older than she was. The census of 1930 gives her age at marriage as sixteen, which puts the wedding about 1906. Her first child, William, was born about 1907. Ethel followed about 1909 and Joseph about 1911. Raymond was born at Hoboken on 23 August 1919 and Edward, the youngest, at Hoboken on 30 November 1923.
In 1920 the family lived at Hoboken, where the census taker wrote her name as Katherine. By 1930 they had moved to 261 New York Avenue in the Eleventh Ward of Jersey City, and all five children were living at home. Catherine was forty. In 1940, at fifty, she was in the same house, with Alfonso, Ethel, Raymond and Edward.
When Alfonso registered for the draft in 1942, the person he named as the one who would always know his address was "Mrs. A. DeRisi, 261 New York Ave." In April 1950 she was sixty and keeping house at the same address. Her youngest son Edward and his wife Gloria were living with her and Alfonso.
The date and place of her death are not known. She was not buried in the De Risi graves at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, where Alfonso was laid in 1974.
