Edward DeRisi
Edward DeRisi was born at Hoboken, New Jersey, on 30 November 1923. He was the youngest child of Alfonso De Risi, a tailor born in Italy who had come to America in 1899, and Catherine F. Ryan, a New Jersey woman whose parents were both Irish born. He had three older brothers, William, Joseph and Raymond, and one sister, Ethel.
He grew up in Jersey City. By 1930 the family had moved from Hoboken to 261 New York Avenue in the Eleventh Ward, and the census taker found Edward there at six, with his parents and all four of his brothers and sister. In 1940 he was sixteen and living in the same house, with his parents, Ethel and Raymond. By 1942 his father was running his own business at 277 New York Avenue, a few doors away.
By April 1950 Edward was twenty six and married. He and his wife Gloria were living with his parents at 261 New York Avenue. Edward worked forty hours a week as a timekeeper for Railway Express, the Railway Express Agency, the national company that carried parcels and freight by rail. Gloria worked as a secretary, and the census gave her age as twenty. Her maiden name was Warren, as the note on Edward's grave records. His daughter Donna was born at Jersey City in 1950.
Edward DeRisi died on 8 January 2008, at eighty four. He was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, the large Catholic cemetery of the Archdiocese of Newark, beside Gloria, who had died in April 1998. They lie in Block 7, Section D, grave 154. His parents' grave, number 153, is next to theirs. The cemetery records him as Edward De Risi Sr., so he had a son of his own name.
