Catherine Hadley

d. 1710
Died 1710
Children include Simon

Catherine Hadley was the wife of Simon Hadley of Ballynakill, in King's County, Ireland, a gentleman who kept an iron smithy there and held four fish sheds on the manor of Clontarf in County Dublin. She belonged to Moate Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends, in County Westmeath near the King's County line. Her maiden name is not known.

The meeting's register records her death. Chalmers Hadley, who printed it in 1916, gives the entry as "Catherine Hadley, wife of Simon Hadley (and mother of Simon Hadley the second, who emigrated to Pennsylvania), died the 20th of 4th month 1710, and was buried four days later." In the Quaker reckoning of the time the fourth month was June, so she died on 20 June 1710.

By an account from the Office of Arms in Dublin, she "seems to have been the first of the family to join the Society of Friends." Her husband "seems never to have joined." If that is right, the Quaker line of the Hadleys begins with her. Her son Simon carried it to Pennsylvania in 1712, and at New Garden he became one of the trustees of the meeting's land.

Her husband married again within the year, a woman named Elizabeth, and died in 1711. The administration of his estate named his son John, his widow Elizabeth, and two married daughters, Elizabeth Miller and Jane Kiernan. Whether those children were Catherine's is not stated.

That she was the mother of the emigrant Simon is the compiler's note in parentheses, not the words of the meeting record itself. The Hadley Genealogy of 1937 calls her Catherine Talbot, from a family tradition that the first Hadley in Ireland married "___ Talbot," and gives no source. The same book turns her death date into 26 April, which misreads the Quaker month.
