Simon Hadley was born in Ireland about 1675. He was a Friend of Moate Meeting in County Westmeath. In 1712 he crossed to Pennsylvania and bought a large tract in what was then the Manor of Steyning, later New Garden Township. A later boundary survey put his home on the Delaware side of the line, in New Castle County.

By Chalmers Hadley's Notes on the Quaker Family of Hadley, published in 1916, he was the son of Simon Hadley of Ballynakill in King's County, a gentleman who kept an iron smithy and held four fish sheds on the manor of Clontarf. His mother, Catherine, was a Friend of Moate Meeting and died in June 1710. His father married again and died the next year. The administration of the estate in June 1711 went to his brother John, his stepmother Elizabeth, and his sisters Elizabeth Miller and Jane Kiernan. Simon was not named. He sailed for Pennsylvania in 1712.

In 1717 he built a house and marked its date stone "S. and R. H. 1717," for himself and his wife Ruth. The house still stands on Limestone Road near Hockessin, Delaware, known now as the J. McIntyre Farm. It grew in sections, from 1717 to a frame addition of 1894, and the early brick has been stuccoed over. The pointed gable windows and long porch that Chalmers Hadley described in 1916 are still there. That year he was one of four men granted six acres in trust for New Garden Meeting. In 1726 he was a justice of the peace for New Castle County.

A meeting register enters seven children of "Simon Hadly & Ruth his wife." Deborah, Joshua, Simon, Hannah and Ruth were born in Ireland between 1701 and 1712. Katherine and Ann were born after the crossing, in 1715 and 1717/18. His daughter Ruth married Thomas Lindley at New Garden in 1731. His wife Ruth died in 1750/51, and he married Phebe Buffington. He died suddenly at his home in February 1756.
