Catherine Huey was born in 1790 in the Lancaster District of South Carolina, the eldest daughter of Hercules Huey and Isabella Smith. Her grandparents had come out of County Antrim to the Waxhaws, and her family and the Harpers belonged to the same Shiloh congregation near Lancaster.
She married William Harper in the winter of 1807 and bore eight children over twenty one years. They lived about three miles from the town of Lancaster. He died there on 5 February 1831, with the youngest of the children not yet three.
In the fall of 1833 she left South Carolina with the family and went to Harris County, Georgia, where her brothers Samuel and James had settled. In 1837 she sold out and moved on to Sumter County, onto the place a William Dozier owned in 1894, and she lived there the rest of her life. Several of her children married and stayed in Sumter County, and her youngest son Samuel married there in 1850. She died on 13 June 1855, nearly a quarter of a century after her husband.

Ten Harper stones stand in two groups at Lancaster, and the dates on them sort the family out.
THE GROUP WILLIAM A. HARPER OF 1774 IS IN. WILLIAM A. HARPER, JR., born 1746, died 19 September 1813. ANNE YOUNG HARPER, born 2 January 1745, died 16 July 1841, in her ninety seventh year. WILLIAM A. HARPER, born 1774, died 5 February 1831. ANDREW KNOX HARPER, born 6 August 1787, died 1 September 1833. MARTHA JANE HARPER MARSHALL, born 22 November 1823, died 4 October 1844.
THE GROUP AT RIVERSIDE. BENJAMIN HARPER, born 1735, died 12 June 1801. MARTHA KNOX HARPER, born 1743, died 1 January 1815. ROBERT HARPER, born 1772, died 15 May 1806. JAMES B. HARPER, born April 1797, died 29 September 1806. MARTHA E. HARPER, born July 1804, died 21 October 1805.
THE ELDER COUPLE ARE THE PARENTS, AND THREE THINGS SAY SO. The stone reads William A. Harper JUNIOR, so a William A. Harper stood before him and the man of 1774 is the third of the name, which is what a middle initial repeated across three generations usually means. The ages work exactly: William Junior was twenty eight and Anne twenty nine when the man of 1774 was born. And the daughter born in 1815 was christened ANN YOUNG HARPER, while her grandmother, born Anne Young, was still alive and would live another twenty six years. That is a maiden name carried down, the same custom that put HUEY into John Huey Harper's name from the other side of the house.
ANDREW KNOX HARPER, born 1787, is almost certainly a younger brother, and MARTHA KNOX HARPER at Riverside is where the Knox comes from. The two groups are one connection, and the Harpers and the Knoxes married into each other more than once.
NO DOCUMENT HERE SAYS SON OF. These are stones, ages and a naming custom, which together make a strong case and not a proof, and they sit on top of a joint that is itself unproven: see [[why-the-lancaster-harpers-are-attached-here]]. The instrument that would settle both at once is William A. Harper's estate file in the Lancaster District after February 1831, which would name his children, and the will or estate of William A. Harper Junior after September 1813, which would name his. Neither is in any searchable index.
