Hercules Huey was born in County Antrim in 1766 and was brought to the Waxhaws of South Carolina as a small child. He was nine when his father made his will on Cane Creek in September 1775 and died. The will kept the family together on the plantation until the children came of age, and called him Arculeas.

He married Isabella Smith, and they raised ten children, five boys and five girls: Catherine, the eldest daughter, born in 1790; Samuel; James; John; Alexander; Joseph; Sarah; Margaret; Nancy and Mary. The Hueys and the Harpers worshipped together at the Shiloh church near Lancaster, and his daughter Catherine married William Harper. His son Joseph was burned to death in February 1823, at about twenty one.

In 1790 the census taker listed him in Lancaster County as head of a household of one man and three women and girls, next to a James Hughey, most likely his brother. In January 1793 the state granted him 140 acres on the waters of Cane Creek, bounded by the land of George Walker, Mary Stinson and Henry Coffey and by the old province line with North Carolina.

When his mother died in 1808 he put up a stone for her and his father in the Old Waxhaw churchyard, and had his own name cut at the foot of it. He died in 1841 and is buried in the Tirzah churchyard, near the Walkers and McCains his brothers and sisters married into.
