Catherine Mayor
Catherine Mayor was of Much Hoole, in Lancashire, when she married George Norris of Croston parish at St Michael's, Hoole, on 27 April 1740. The register enters her as "Catherine Mayor, M. Hoole."
Her baptism is not certain. Three girls of the name were baptised at Hoole within seven years of each other. Kathrine, daughter of Hugh Mare and Ann, was baptised on 4 February 1704/5. Kathrin, daughter of Thomas Mayor, was baptised on 21 October 1711. Catherine, daughter of Evan Mayor of Much Hoole, was baptised on 1 June 1712. Any one of them could have been the bride of 1740, who would then have been between twenty-seven and thirty-five.
The couple settled at Bretherton, in Croston parish, where George was a husbandman. A son Robert, baptised at Hoole in March 1740/1 as the son of George Norriss of Much Hoole, was probably theirs. Their son Thomas was baptised at Croston on 26 February 1743/4.
She died young. "Catharine Norris, Wife of George Norris," of Bretherton, husbandman, was buried at Croston on 13 July 1749. Thomas was five. When he had children of his own, he named the first of them Catharine, in 1771.
