Thomas Norris
Thomas Norris was probably the boy baptised at Croston on 26 February 1743/4 and entered as "Thomas Norris, Son of George Norris & Catherine. Abode: Bretherton. Occupation: Husbandman." His parents, George Norris and Catherine Mayor, had married at Hoole in 1740. His mother was buried at Croston when he was five. His father probably married again the next year, and a second family of half-brothers and sisters, Barnell, Hugh, Parnell and William, followed between 1752 and 1763.
He grew up a husbandman of Bretherton himself, like his father. He married Jenet Ryding at Croston on 16 January 1770, by banns, and signed the register with a mark. Their children were baptised as the household walked north: Catharine and George at Croston with the abode Bretherton, Margaret the same, Betty at Hoole with the abode Great Hoole, and Alice at St Andrew's in Leyland in February 1782. The first daughter carried his mother's name and the first son his father's.
Seven months after that last baptism he was dead. Croston buried him on 16 September 1782 and entered his abode as Leyland. The family had been in the new parish barely a year and they took him home to the old one. Catherine was eleven.
His widow married again in 1789, probably to Thomas Mawdsley, a weaver of Leyland.
