Catherine Satchfield
Catherine Satchfield was baptized at St Peter Cornhill, London, on 27 May 1569. She was the daughter of Gilbert Satchfield and his wife Anne. Her father died when she was eight, and her mother in 1586. Her mother's will left a bequest to "Katherine Satchfield my daughter."
Some time after 1596 she became the second wife of Thomas Horton, a widowed mercer of St Martin Vintry, many years older than she was. They had two daughters, Sarah, born about 1598, and Parnell, born about 1600. When Thomas made his will in 1615 he left her a third of his estate. He made their daughters' marriage portions depend on the consent of Catherine and of her brother, Richard Satchfield. He died before January 1621.
Sarah married Roger Conant at St Ann's, Blackfriars, in 1618. Parnell married James Wallis, the parish clerk of St Margaret Moses.
Catherine made her will on 9 September 1627. She left legacies to her daughters, Parnell Wallis and "Sara Conant," and to three grandchildren, Elizabeth Wallis, Caleb Connant and Sara Connant. There were bequests to cousins and godchildren and to her sister Mary Stonehowse. Parnell was her residuary legatee and sole executrix. The will was proved on 13 October 1627.
She died four days after making it, in her son-in-law's house. The register of St Margaret Moses records: "Mrs. Katherine Horton, widow of Mr. Tho: Horton, Mercer, was brought out of her son-in-law his house (James Wallis the parish Clark, dwelling in Cattle yard) and was buryed in the Church the thirteenth of September 1627."
By then Sarah was in New England. The granddaughter named in the will had been born there. The grandson Caleb had stayed behind in England and died unmarried before November 1633.
