Catherine Taylor
Catherine Taylor, called Katie, was born about 1812. The census of 1850 gives her birthplace as Virginia, and those of 1860 and 1870 as North Carolina. She married John P. Vanover, a North Carolina man, and raised at least ten children with him between the early 1830s and the middle 1850s.
In 1850 she was Catharine Vanover, 38, in Grayson County, Virginia, with John and seven children, the youngest, Martha Ann, a newborn. By 1857 the family was in Wise County, Virginia, and in 1860 she was 47 there with seven children at home. In 1870, aged 56, she was in Walker district of Wise County with her husband and four of the children: Daniel, Martha, Nancy and Henry.
Her children's marriages in Wise County name her as Catherine Vanover: Martha's to Robert L. Mitchell on Christmas Day 1872, and John R.'s to Sarah Jane Gibson on 15 June 1876. Her maiden name survives on the Kentucky death records of two of her children: Martha Vanover Mitchell, who died at Pikeville in 1930, and Henry Vanover, who died in 1925. Both name their mother Catherine or Katie Taylor.
She died before December 1889, when her husband, aged 76, married Nancy Vance in Dickenson County.
