John R. Vanover

b. 1848 · North Carolina
Born 1848, Grayson County, Virginia
Father: John P. Vanover
Mother: Catherine Taylor
Children include Frances

John R. Vanover was the son of John P. Vanover and Catherine Taylor. His father was a North Carolina man, and the family lived on both sides of the line between Ashe County, North Carolina, and Grayson County, Virginia. The census of 1850 found John R., aged 2, in his parents' house in Grayson County and gave his birthplace as Virginia; in 1860 he was 12. When he married in 1876 and when he was counted in 1880, he gave North Carolina.

In 1850 the household held his parents and his brothers and sisters Polly, Nelly, William T., Lacy J., Jackson and the baby Martha Ann. By 1857 the family had moved west to Wise County, Virginia, and in 1860 John R. was there with his parents and William T., Stacia J., Daniel, Martha A., Nancy J. and Henry F.

His first wife was Margaret Mullins, the daughter of Booker and Nancy Mullins. Their daughter Frances, called Frankie, was born about 1872; the Kentucky death record of Frankie Baker, who died at Burdine in 1925, names her parents John R. Vanover and Margret Mullins. In May 1875 John reported the death of his wife to the Wise County assessor. She was 22, and the register calls her Jane Vanover, the daughter of Booker and Nancy Mullens.

On 15 June 1876, in Wise County, John R. Vanover, 24, married Sarah Jane Gibson, 18, a Wise County girl, the daughter of John H. and Mary Gibson. The register names his parents as John P. and Catherine Vanover. In June 1880 the census taker found J. R. Vanover, 29, in Walker district of Wise County with his wife Jane and two daughters, Frances and Elizabeth. Elizabeth was Jane's child, born about 1876, and Frances grew up in the same house as her half sister.

On 17 June 1889 Frances, then seventeen, married John Baker in Dickenson County, and the clerk wrote her father as John R. J. Vanover. A year later, on 10 September 1890, Elizabeth married Marion Baker, John Baker's brother, and the clerk named her parents John R. and Jane Vanover. The two half sisters had married two brothers. Elizabeth, later Elizabeth Meeks, died in Kentucky, and her death record names her parents John R. Vanover and Sarah Jane Gibson. When and where John R. Vanover died is not known.
