Celia Grossman

b. 1894 · Galicia, Austria
Born 1894, Galicia, Austria
Children include Irving

Celia Grossman was born on 28 December 1894 in Galicia, the Polish province of the Austrian empire. Her naturalization papers of 1940 give the town as Mechnowitz, Poland. Her father was Frank Grossman and her mother was Ida Sandman.

She was living at 125 Osborne Street in Brooklyn when she married Samuel Feld on 1 March 1919. She was 25 and he was 23, and both had been born in Galicia. Neither had been married before. They were married at 466 Rockaway Avenue by Solomon Langner, with Abraham Levin and Meirow Pamnoff as witnesses.

Celia had two children. Sylvia was born in Brooklyn on 15 November 1919, and Irving on 8 January 1921. The 1920 census gave her birthplace as Poland, Austria. Through the 1930s the family lived in Brownsville, and from at least 1935 at 710 Stone Avenue.

Celia became an American citizen in her own right on 22 January 1940, in the federal court at Brooklyn. Samuel had become a citizen in 1925, after a 1922 law ended the rule that a wife took her husband's citizenship, so Celia had to apply on her own. In April 1950 she was 53 and living with Sam in the same part of Brownsville as her son Irving and his family.
