Irving Feld
Irving Feld was born in Brooklyn on 8 January 1921, the younger child and only son of Samuel Feld and Celia Grossman. Both his parents were Jewish immigrants from Galicia, the Polish province of the Austrian empire. They had married in Brooklyn in March 1919, and his sister Sylvia was born that November.
Irving grew up in Brownsville, in east Brooklyn. In 1930 he was 9, living with his parents and Sylvia. From at least 1935 the family rented an apartment at 710 Stone Avenue for $32 a month. In April 1940 he was 19 and single, and had finished four years of high school. His father was a clerk and later a presser of men's clothing.
Across Stone Avenue, at the corner of Riverdale Avenue, lived the Pomerantz family with their daughter Jeanne, born in May 1921. Irving married her, and by February 1942 she was Mrs. Jean Feld. On 15 February 1942 Irving registered for the draft. He was 21, 5 feet 11, 190 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair and a ruddy complexion. He and Jean lived in apartment 8 at 693 Stone Avenue, the building next to her parents'. He worked for Terminal Jewelry Shops, Inc., at 92-57 New York Boulevard in Jamaica, Queens.
On 5 April 1943 Irving was inducted into the Army in New York City as a private, for the duration of the war plus six months. His record gave his civilian trade as jeweler and watchmaker and noted that he was married. His daughter Sharon was born about 1944.
After the war Irving went back to his trade. In April 1950 he was 29, a watchmaker in the jewelry business, working forty hours a week. He, Jean, Sharon, 6, and their son Bruce, 2, were sharing apartment 9 at 317 Riverdale Avenue with Jean's parents, Leo and Fanny Pomerantz. Irving's own parents lived in the same district, a page further along the census taker's route. A third child, Jay, was born in Brooklyn in 1954.
Jean died in October 1986, at 65. Irving lived on for almost thirty years, spending his later years at Deerfield Beach in Broward County, Florida, where his father and sister also lived. He died in Florida on 16 July 2016, at 95, and his death notice was published from Hewlett, Long Island. He was buried beside Jean at New Montefiore Cemetery in West Babylon, Long Island, in the plot of the King Solomon Triangle Club.
