Cesarine Senevey
Jeanne Cesarine Senevey was born at Levier, in the Doubs department of eastern France, on 12 July 1807. Her parents, Jean Antoine Senevey and Jeanne Marguerite, were farmers in the town, and she had a brother, Claude François, two years younger. Levier is a market town in the Jura mountains, between Besançon and the Swiss border. She went by Cesarine.
On 13 November 1832, at twenty five, she married Jean Pierre Melin, a farmer of Levier five years older than she was, at the town hall. Her brother was a witness and she signed the register herself, Cesarine Senevey. In October 1833 they were living on the rue du Carouge, and on the fifth of that month, at three in the afternoon, she gave birth there to their son Joseph Victor. When her husband registered the birth the next evening, the mayor wrote her down as twenty six.
Eight children of the marriage are named from the Levier registers: Joseph Victor in 1833, Françoise Esther in 1835, Casimir Fernand in 1837, Marie Julie in 1839, Louis Felix in 1844, Constant Casimir in 1847, Charles Emile in 1849 and Victor Edmond in 1852. Constant Casimir died as a baby in 1848. Françoise Esther and Charles Emile both died in 1852.
In the early 1850s the family left Levier for Missouri and settled in Linn Township, Osage County. Jean Pierre died there in September 1853, and Cesarine was left a widow at forty six in a new country. She never remarried.
In the summer of 1870 the census taker found her in Linn, aged sixty three and born in France, in the household of her son Victor. Victor's wife Clementine and their two year old son Peter were there, and so were her son Felix, twenty six, and a Mary Melin of eighteen, also born in France. Victor moved his family to Jasper County, in the southwest of the state, in the following decades.
Cesarine died in Linn Township on 21 October 1895, aged eighty eight. She was buried beside the Catholic church at Loose Creek, in the Old Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery, where her husband had been buried forty two years before. When her son Felix died at Linn in 1911, his son did not know Felix's father's name, but he gave his grandmother's maiden name correctly as Cesarine Senevey.
