Victor Joseph Melin
Joseph Victor Melin was born at three o'clock in the afternoon of 5 October 1833, in his parents' house on the rue du Carouge in Levier, in the Doubs department of eastern France. Levier is a market town in the Jura mountains, between Besançon and the Swiss border. His father, Jean Pierre Melin, was a farmer of thirty one. His mother, Jeanne Claude Cesarine Senevey, was twenty six. His father registered the birth with the mayor the next evening, and the family and his gravestone memorial later kept 6 October, the day of the registration, as his birthday.
He was the eldest of eight children: Françoise Esther, Casimir Fernand, Marie Julie, Louis Felix, Constant Casimir, Charles Emile and Victor Edmond followed between 1835 and 1852. In the early 1850s the whole family left Levier for the United States and settled in Linn Township, Osage County, Missouri. His father died there in September 1853, when Victor was nineteen.
On 14 November 1867 Victor married Clementine Vaughan in Osage County. She had grown up in Linn Township, a daughter of Peter Vaughan, a Virginian. The clerk wrote the groom's name as Victor Melton. In 1870 the census taker found the household in Linn: Victor, thirty seven, born in France, Clementine, twenty seven, their son Peter, two, Victor's widowed mother Cesarine, sixty three, his brother Felix, twenty six, and a Mary Melin of eighteen, born in France.
Six children are recorded: Peter (1868), Cora (1872), Casimir (1874), Francis Emmett (1878), and Laura and Charles S. Melin, both born in 1881. Charles gave his birthplace as Linn County, Missouri, on his death certificate.
The family moved to Jasper County, in the southwest corner of the state. Clementine died there in 1902. Victor farmed in McDonald Township, near Avilla, until he retired. On 2 September 1916 Dr. S. X. Cordonnier of Avilla began attending him, and Victor died at eight in the morning on 16 September 1916, aged eighty two years, eleven months and ten days, from paralysis following a cerebral hemorrhage, with arteriosclerosis contributing. His son C. Melin of Reeds, Missouri, gave the facts for the certificate and could not supply the names of his grandparents. Victor was buried in the Williams Cemetery at Avilla on 18 September, with the Knell Undertaking Company of Carthage in charge.
