Charles Burgert
Charles Burgert was born in Germany in November 1847, by the 1900 census's reckoning. When and with whom he crossed is not established. By about 1878 he was in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, where he married Emily Will, a daughter of German immigrants born in the town itself, and where their six known children were born between 1879 and 1899: Annie, Leo Joseph, Mary Helene, Louise, Charles and Andrew.
He was the town's blacksmith, or one of them. When his estate was appraised, the inventory took in blacksmithing supplies, machinery and everything used in connection with the blacksmith shop, and the administrator asked leave to sell the whole of it at private sale as being for the best interest of the estate.
He died in 1909. On June 7 of that year Charles W. Meyers was appointed administrator, giving bond of one thousand dollars with John L. Boone and Joseph Weiler as securities, and the next day the court ordered the shop goods sold. Claims allowed against the estate that August came from the Bank of Ste. Genevieve and from Anton Kranzle, and the following February the court allowed, by agreement, two claims of Joseph Burgert for $325 and $50. On February 1, 1910 the administrator sold the real estate at private sale, a lot on the north side of Washington Street adjoining one the widow already owned, to Emily Burgert herself, for one thousand dollars in cash. The court confirmed the sale and ordered the deed, which was recorded March 8, 1910.
His exact death date and his grave are not known; Missouri's death registration began the year after he died, so no certificate exists. Emily never remarried. Her own certificate in 1937, twenty-eight years later, still names her the widow of Charles Burgert.
