Charles Everts
Charles Everts was born in Pennsylvania on 20 November 1818. As a young man he lived in New York State, where he married and where his children were born, from John about 1843 to Mary about 1862. His wife was Angeline, born in New York in 1823.
Some time after 1862 the family moved west to Scott County, Iowa, the county around Davenport on the Mississippi. In 1870 Charles, 53, was farming in Liberty Township with Angeline, 46, and four children: Claressa 20, Peter 18, Walter 11 and Mary E., 8, all born in New York. In 1880 the family was in Dixon, a small town in the north of the county. Charles was 61; Angeline, 56; their son John, 36; Walter, 21; and Mary, 18, still at home.
Eleven months later, on 1 January 1881, Mary married Ole P. Bolkan, a Norwegian immigrant, in Scott County. Her elder sister Clara married a Preston.
Charles Everts died at Dixon on 28 December 1892, aged 74 years, 1 month and 8 days, and was buried in Dixon Cemetery under a tall monument with a carved finial.
