Mary E. Everts was born in New York State about 1862, the youngest child of Charles Everts, a Pennsylvania-born farmer, and his wife Angeline, a New Yorker. She had at least five older brothers and sisters: John, Clara, Peter and Walter among them. In the 1860s the family moved west to Scott County, Iowa. In 1870 Mary E. was 8, in her father's house in Liberty Township, and in 1880 she was 18 and at home in Dixon, with her parents and her brothers John and Walter.

On 1 January 1881, in Scott County, she married Ole P. Bolkan, a Norwegian-born farmer's son from Worth County; the licence had been issued on 27 December 1880. The clerk wrote her surname Evarts in one entry and Everts in another. The family later remembered her as Marie. The name Preston has been attached to her in later listings, but no census or marriage record gives it; her elder sister Clara was the one who married a Preston.

She went with Ole to the Sheyenne valley of Dakota Territory, where he filed on land in 1888, and their two children were born in Griggs County: Gustavus on 6 March 1889 and Angeline, named for Mary's mother, in 1896. In June 1900 she was 37, married nineteen years, on the farm in Broadview Township. In 1910 the household at Sverdrup Township held Ole, 61, Mary, 48, Gustavus, 21, Angeline, 13, a hired man, and Ole's mother Anna, 88, who died there in 1911.

Angeline married Olaf Severson and had a son, Harland, in 1920. Ole died in 1930. Mary died in 1935 in Griggs County and was buried beside him at Ness Lutheran Cemetery near Cooperstown.
