Charles H. Mitchell was born on 19 September 1847 at Leeds, Androscoggin County, the fourth of the five children of Jesse Mitchell and Elvira Knapp, and a grandson of Thomas Mitchell, the mill builder of Quaker Ridge who had been a soldier of 1812. The family moved north to Madrid, in the Franklin County hills, where his parents are buried.

He went to the Civil War as a boy. His gravestone names his regiment, Company I of the 32nd Maine Infantry, which was raised in the spring of 1864 and went straight into Grant's campaign in Virginia with the Ninth Corps: Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and the Crater. He would have been sixteen or seventeen. The regiment was so used up that it was consolidated into the 31st Maine before the year was out.

On 20 October 1872, at Phillips, he married Lucy Jane Lakin, who was nineteen. Their children were Jane E. (1873), Susan Clara (1876, born at Madrid), James Marion (1878) and Benjamin C. (1880). The family came down to Moose Hill, on the Fayette side of Livermore Falls, where two of the girls married two Walton brothers, Albert and Almon.

He was killed by a train on 2 February 1909 at Chisholm, the paper-mill village in the town of Jay across the river from Livermore Falls, aged sixty-one. The state's death return names his parents, Jesse Mitchell and Elvira Knapp. His son James, who had been working in the woods in Virginia, came home for the funeral and met there the schoolteacher he would marry that August. Charles is buried at Moose Hill Cemetery with his wife, who outlived him by twenty-eight years, on a granite monument shared with their son Benjamin and his wife Gertrude Burwood. It gives his regiment under his name.
