Susan Clara Mitchell
Susan Clara Mitchell, called Susie, was born on 25 July 1876 at Madrid, Franklin County, the second child of Charles H. Mitchell, a veteran of the 32nd Maine Infantry, and Lucy J. Lakin. Her brother James Marion was born two years later. The family moved down to the Moose Hill neighbourhood on the line of Fayette and Livermore Falls, where her father was killed by a train in February 1909.
On 26 April 1896, of East Livermore, she married Almon Walton of Livermore. Her sister Jane had married his half-brother Albert in 1894. Their children were Harold Almon, Doris Pearl, born at East Livermore in April 1899, and Percy Edmond, born at Brunswick in February 1902. The records never settled on her name: she is Susie C. at her marriage and in the 1900 and 1920 censuses, Clara S. on Doris's birth return, Susan C. on Percy's, and Clara S. Walton in the state's index of her death. Almon died at South Gardiner in 1921 and she lived another forty years, dying at Wilton on 2 January 1962, aged eighty-five, and was buried beside him at Lakeview Cemetery, Oakland.
In March 1946 her son Percy, then forty-four, married her brother James's youngest daughter Phoebe, twenty, at Fayette. Their son Carrol James, born the year before, was her grandson and her brother's grandson at once.
