Charles J. Davenport
Charles J. Davenport was born in Michigan in 1874 to parents who were both Michigan born. In 1900 he married Reba D. Carter, a farmer's daughter of Clarence Township in Calhoun County, and they spent their lives there.
Their first years together were hard ones. Their son Laurence C. Davenport was born and died in 1901. Two more babies died in 1902 and 1904, and another child in 1905. All four were buried in Clarence Center Cemetery. Then on 30 July 1906, Reba's own birthday, their daughter Minnie Laurie was born, and she lived. Benjamin followed in 1909, Cleave in 1912 and Eunice in 1915.
In the census of 1920 Charles was 45, the head of a household in Clarence Township with Reba, 44, and the four children. He died on 6 September 1954. He is buried in Clarence Center Cemetery under a gray granite stone he shares with Reba, carved with flowers at the corners: "Davenport. Charles J., 1874 - 1954. Reba D., 1875 - 1960."
