Charles Stearns

Children include John

Charles Stearns was at Watertown, Massachusetts, by 1646. His date of birth is not known. How he was related to the other early Stearns settlers is not known either. Isaac Stearns of Watertown called him kinsman in his will. A family tradition makes him and a brother Nathaniel the orphaned sons of a Shubael Stearns, brought up by their uncle Isaac.

His first wife was Hannah. Their son Samuel was born at Watertown on 2 June 1650, and Hannah died on 30 June 1651.

On 22 June 1654 he married Rebecca Gibson, a daughter of John and Rebecca Gibson of Cambridge. Within two years she was "grievously afflicted with a mental disorder, imagining herself to be under the power of witchcraft." Their first two children were born at Cambridge: Shubael on 20 September 1655 and John on 24 January 1657. The family then returned to Watertown, and in February 1658/9 Rebecca was a member of the Watertown church. Isaac was born in 1658 and Rebecca in 1661. Charles was slain in the King's service before 1695. Martha and others followed, seven children in all by Rebecca.

Three early Stearns families, Isaac's, Charles's and Nathaniel's, all named sons John, Isaac and Samuel. His son John, the housewright, settled within the bounds of Lexington.
