John Stearns was born at Cambridge, Massachusetts, on 24 January 1657. He was a son of Charles Stearns and his second wife, Rebecca Gibson. When he was a baby the family went back to Watertown, where his father had lived before.

He was a housewright, a builder of houses. About 1681 he married Judith Lawrence, born at Watertown on 12 May 1660, a daughter of George Lawrence and Elizabeth Crispe. The birth of one child, Rebecca, probably the eldest, was entered at Watertown. The family lived within the limits of what became Lexington.

Their eldest five children were baptized together on 22 June 1690 by the Rev. John Bailey of Watertown. The next seven were baptized on 11 May 1710 by the Rev. Mr. Angier. He had thirteen children in all. Among them was John, who married Deliverance Bigelow, lived at Worcester, and was a captain.

Judith died before 1713. On 2 April 1713 he married Mary Norcross, born 10 July 1663, a daughter of Richard and Mary (Brooks) Norcross of Watertown. He died at Lexington on 22 February 1722.
