Charles Wright Fuller
Charles Wright Fuller was born on 28 October 1878 in Laurens County, South Carolina. His parents were John R. Fuller, a farmer, and Mary Elizabeth Moore. As a small boy he went by his middle name: on the census of June 1880 he is Write Fuller, two years old.
That year the family farmed in Waterloo Township, in the south of Laurens County. His grandmother Edney Fuller, a widow, lived in the next house but one, and the family of his uncle, William Fuller, lived in between. His older brothers and sister were Samuel, Lizzie and Green. After him came Allie, who was called Cleo, Claude, Birt and Guy, and two more children who died young.
In 1900 Charles was 21, single, and working on the farm his father rented at Waterloo. His brother Birt died in October 1918, aged 27, and his father died at Laurens in 1923.
Charles married late. His wife, Miranda Cagle, was born in Tennessee in January 1905, more than twenty six years after him. They started out at Gastonia, in Gaston County, North Carolina, a city built around cotton mills. Charles was a cotton mill operative, and they lived in the mill village of the Gray mill. Their first child, Lenora, was born there on 6 July 1922, when Charles was 43 and Miranda about 17. On her birth certificate his age went down as 34 and Miranda's as 20. Their son Bert was born in Gaston County in August 1923. The family then settled in the country near Roebuck, south of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and stayed there for the rest of his life.
Charles and Miranda had at least eleven children: Lenora, Bert Earl, Sudie Mae, Merlin Sweetwater, Gale Earle, Dorothy Elizabeth, Newey Leonard, Roy, Eugene, Kenneth Floyd and Rosa Lee. The youngest, Rosa Lee, was born in 1944, when he was 65.
In April 1950 Charlie W. Fuller, 72, was still working fifty hours a week on his own farm in the Walnut Grove district of Spartanburg County. Miranda, 46, worked as a bander in a cotton mill. Six children were at home: Merlin, 23, who was going to a school for veterans, Leonard, 14, Roy, 12, Eugene, 11, Kenneth, 8, and Rosa Lee, 6. Over his working life Charles described his trade as textile operator in the cotton business.
On 15 October 1952 he fell ill and Dr. W. B. Lancaster of Spartanburg was called. He died at home on Route 1, Roebuck, at 3 in the morning on 19 October 1952, of a cerebral haemorrhage, a bleed in the brain, after four days. He had high blood pressure. He was nine days short of his 74th birthday. Miranda gave the details for his death certificate. She named his parents as John Fuller and Mary Moore. J. F. Floyd Mortuary buried him on 21 October 1952 in Sunset Memorial Park at Spartanburg. Miranda lived another 28 years and was buried beside him in 1980.
